"A mannerist uses a type of drawing unique to himself. I choose to use the figure to explore the possibilities of mannerism.
In the art of drawing, you have drawing per se, rendering and draftsmanship which combine in different ways that are unique to each artist. As a mannerist I prefer draftsmanship.
Most of these figures are executed with a ballpoint pen which allows very few changes. The composition of the paintings are different than what most are used to seeing. The figures' relationships to each other are based on historically familiar concepts. Most important to me is the expression of the figure rather than a photographic portrayal.
The reason I chose the book of Revelation is because it is visionary. It allows me to draw the figure without being encumbered with a literal portrayal. What you’ll notice is that these result in loose motifs." -- Joseph Tonini
